Bearded Seal on Cape Ann

Apparently for the past several weeks a bearded seal has been regularly hanging out in Gloucester Harbor, especially over in Rocky Neck.

bearded seal on dockBearded seals are a very northern species, typically seen in the Arctic Ocean or Northern Atlantic Ocean as far south as Newfoundland. This may be the very first confirmed sighting ever in this part of Massachusetts.


bearded seal on dockThey usually weigh in the range of 600-800 pounds and about typically are about 6.5-8 feet long. This individual was about 7 to 7.5 feet long, and has been estimated at almost 700 lbs.
