The Whale Center of New England (WCNE) offers summer volunteer positions to college undergraduate students who have completed at least their junior year of studies, and to recent college graduates. Volunteers work closely with interns and WCNE staff. A few volunteer positions in summer from mid-May through late-Aug are available. Volunteers are responsible for collecting, organizing, transcribing, and analyzing data dealing with the behavior and identification of North Atlantic cetaceans. This may involve extensive computer work (training provided). In addition, volunteers will often be involved in public education aboard commercial whale watching vessels, along with intensive study aboard our 42' research vessel, Mysticete. Fall and spring volunteers will also be more heavily involved in data processing and analysis. As a result, we are looking for individuals with a blend of enthusiasm, scientific skills, and communication abilities. The only difference between the internship and the volunteership is a financial one. The training, duties and responsibilities of interns and volunteers are the same. However, the volunteer does not pay the intern fee, but must provide their own room and board. At times, housing can be difficult to find, but we always put the volunteers in contact with each other so that they look for a place together. Past volunteers have also lived with friends or relatives in nearby areas such as Boston and Salem. Since we understand the financial burden this can be, we give the volunteers a guaranteed 2 days off per week so that they can have another part-time job if they choose. Thank you for your interest!
