Grades 6-8: Town Meeting

ObjectiveStudents will learn about the compromises and realities involved in creating effective conservation through role playing.
MaterialsCharacter page.
Time Frame1-2 hours
Teacher BackgroundSee Conservation in the Background Information Section and review the Character page to understand the various roles.
Dive In!How do seemingly conflicting interests compromise to create conservation plans and protect the environment?
ProcessReview each of the characters on the Character page and become familiar with each. They have different agendas and ideas about what would be needful to do.

Students can be divided into groups corresponding with the different characters. Because it is likely that there will be more students than roles, these groups of students can decide on a course of action to reach the goal, according to their character's interests and ideas. One person can be elected spokesperson by the group and will portray the character in a meeting.

After students have had sufficient time to meet and decide on their actions, the Town Meeting will be convened. You can serve as moderator to keep things going smoothly. Open the meeting by restating the issue at hand and having the students present their ideas for action.
