Grades 6-8: Build a Habitat
| Objective | Students will learn of the varied habitat requirements that different species of cetaceans have, despite physical similarities. |
| Materials | Books, magazines or other items related to cetacean biology. |
| Time Frame | 2 hours |
| Teacher Background | See Conservation in the Background Information Section.
Several, seemingly similar species have quite different habitat requirements. To protect a species it is vitally important to protect the places where they live, feed and raise young. Therefore, learning what those habitat are and how they are used is one of the most WCNEcial in current conservation. |
| Dive In! | Why are certain species of dolphin found in one spot and not another? Isn't it all one ocean? Why don't they leave dangerous spots and go to safer ones? |
| Process | Pose the above questions to your students. They, or similar variants, are questions basic to much of today's conservation movement. In a world of decreasing resources and space, knowing what to save can't be overestimated in importance. It is, unfortunately, not possible to save everything.
Allow students to choose a species from the list. |
