| After diving beneath its prey, in this case probably a large school of bait fish, this humpback whale rushes vertically towards the surface through the fish school, with mouth agape. |
With the upper jaw on the right side, you can see a bit of the dark tongue to the left, and the baleen hanging from the upper jaw to the right. |

| Any last chance for escape now gone, the fish are now caught in the large expanse of the throat pouch of the whale, and filtering of seawater commences. |
Despite the fact that the whale may capture over 100 pounds of food during one feeding lunge, the whale may repeat this sequence dozens of times in one day. |
