Right Whale fluking photoAs the rough weather began to subside from last week, we tried again for our 5th survey of the season. We began up our middle track line, with the winds already picking up past what they were predicted. Even so, we continued on, spotting one right whale midway through the track (that we were still able to get an identification of despite the seas!) and also conducted a plankton tow.

However as the morning grew on, the winds and seas picked up even more considerably, and eight nautical miles short of finishing our first track, we had to turn around. Despite all of our careful planning, even the forecast has its limits sometimes. Safety is always our priority, but also limited visibility due to increased winds and weather makes a survey obsolete, so we have strict weather guidelines when deciding what days to go out. This helps us collect the least biased data possible.

As we made our long trip home, we saw several blows despite the 25-30 knot winds. We suspected several of them could have been right whales – but hopefully we will determine that for sure our on next survey (in hopefully better weather too!).
